A channel for science, culture, art, ideas

Crete University Press was founded in 1984, with a mutual agreement between the Pancretan Association of America and the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). It functions as a financially independent, non-profit publishing organization within FORTH’s framework.

In Crete University Press, we aim at

  • Academic and scientific publications of international standards,
  • The promotion of scholarly research and publishing in the field of arts and humanities, especially subjects of Greek interest,
  • The communication of science and culture to a wider reading public.

As of today, Crete University Press has published approximately 800 titles, with an average of 55 new titles per year and total sales that have reached 2.5 million copies in Greece. Crete University Press has been honored with numerous and outstanding distinctions by the Academy of Athens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy, the Greek Association of Music and Theatre Critics, among others, both for its publishing activity as a whole and the high quality of specific editions.

Our success is reflected in

  • The 20 prizes awarded by academic societies and organizations,
  • The trust of Greek Universities that choose Crete University Press textbooks for more than 3,000 lecture courses,
  • Our high sales rates in the Greek market (approximately 140,000 copies per year).

Our team

The headquarters of Crete University Press are located in the FORTH complex (Heraklion, Crete), where the administration and financial departments are housed, with a bookstore that also hosts fellow non-profit publishers. The Athens branch is located in a neoclassical building in the heart of the city, the Plaka district. Apart from the editorial, commercial, and communication departments, the building houses a bookstore open for the public. Our presence is not limited to the commercial activity, as we organize numerous events related to our publishing activities and the communication of academic ideas to the general public.
